Description
Magnificent, exciting Lenticular Clouds, also known as Altocumulus Standing Lenticular (ACSL) Clouds, are a mind-tingling sight.
They get their name due to the lens-shape they acquire from their stacking behavior. They most often form where stable moist air flows over mountainous areas. Large-scale standing waves form on the downwind side of the mountain.
Lenticulars can appear and disappear relatively quickly depending on the degree of moisture build up or evaporation. Lenticular clouds can also form in non-mountainous areas, due to shear winds from a front.
